Included in a budget bill was a one-year testing measure that would require anyone wishing to test an autonomous car to receive approval from the Department of Motor Vehicles, according to democratandchronicle.com, which reported that the measure would expire in April 2018.
Other requirements under the rule mean that a licensed driver would be in the car whenever it is on the road and that all tests would happen under the “direct supervision of the New York State Police,” according to the democratandchronicle.com.
The DMV also would be responsible for monitoring self-driving car tests in order to measure the technology’s affect, according to the democratandchronicle.com.
